Young lady, may I suggest taking this question and re-posting it in the Detroit section, in which civilized people may actually know what you’re talking about and be able to help you. It somehow got stuck in the category for Austin, Texas. Also, have you tried Wikipedia or Google?

Lighthouse keeper why have done away with the light house keeper for ?

Question by Rodney: Lighthouse keeper why have done away with the light house keeper for ?
hi why have there done away with the Lighthouse keeper for ? A lighthouse is a tower, building, or other type of structure designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses or, in older times, from a fire, and used as an aid to navigation for pilots at sea or on inland waterways.
Lighthouses are used to mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals and reefs, and safe entries to harbors, and can also assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational aids. by why did they sack the light house keepers for is my Question i.m sure it wos a lonely. can any one help me out please as i don t know much

This does not belong in Zoology but the first part of your question should have told you why… you said “system of lamps and lenses or in older times from a fire”. That of course requires constant care thus the need for a person to stay close by. Even though the lighthouses are the exact same lighthouses as back then they have updated the insides with modern technology. With the use of electricity there is no need for someone to always be there. They can be turned on and controlled from miles if not cities away. Of course someone has to go in from time to time to clean and or make repairs/updates. But it does not require 24/7 attention.

Restaurant with nice view in LA for July 4th?

Question by Tearace: Restaurant with nice view in LA for July 4th?
We’re from Canada and are going to be in LA for our honeymoon on July 4th. We were hoping to have supper in a restaurant with a view to see the fireworks. The 4 restaurants I’ve come across that look like they may be good are:
Orange Hill Restaurant – Orange
The Reef on the Water – Long Beach
Parker’s Lighthouse – Long Beach
The Sky Room – Long Beach
Can anyone tell me if any of these would have views of fireworks, and which restaurant you’d recommend? Thanks!

Answer by CarlisleGirl
I don’t know those restaurants, but the largest and best fireworks display in the West is at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and the only restaurant I can think of with a view is right there, at the clubhouse at the public golf course. You can research all this online, and if they are open and will take reservations, tell them what you have in mind, and make your reservation now, I suggest. It’s not very fancy, but it’s ok as I recall. A lot of clubs meet there, and the view should be great, but check when you contact them — would they serve where you could get a great view of the fireworks?

This would be VERY DRAMATIC!

I’m so taken with my own idea that I am going to suggest it to my husband, too. We live just a few blocks from there and usually watch from our own backyard, but it’s our anniversary on the 8th, and my birthday on the 6th, so if he’s willing, maybe I’ll make us reservations as well. I’ll check it out and amend my answer later on tonight or tomorrow morning.

If I can do so while your question is still posted, I’ll come back and tell you so. In either case, if you go, let the maitre d’ know who you are, and we’ll buy you a congratulatory drink! Cheers!

This is a two part algebra question with ratios, can you solve it?

Question by Lonnie: This is a two part algebra question with ratios, can you solve it?
The Port Austin Reef Lighthouse is 60 feet tall. Use the height of the model given to complete the scale. How many times taller than the model is the actual lighthouse?
Height: 10 inches
scale: 2in.:__ft?

and the second one is
height: 6 inches
scale: 2in.:__ft?

I will give max points for showing how to get these? Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by Gannok
The easiest and first thing to do, is change the 60 feet into inches. This allows you to make a direct comparison.

So 60 x 12 = 720 inches

Now, with the ratio we have:

720 inches : 10 inches

If we divide both sides by 10, we get:

72 inches : 1 inch

This means, that for ever 72 inches of real height, we get 1 inch of model height. So if we have a scale of:

2 inches : ? feet

it’s easy to figure out. We take our ratio 72:1, multiply by 2, and get:

144 : 2

But since we need the 144 in feet, not inches, we divide 144 by 12 inches, and get: 12 feet.

So for the first answer, the answer is: 2 inches : 12 feet

The second one is just the same, only instead of 720 : 10, it’s now 720 : 6. But we get the solution in the same way. We divide both sides. In this case, by 6. So:

720/6 : 6/6 = 120 inches : 1 inch

We now apply the same rules as before. If we want the 2 inches : ? ft we multiply, again by 2.

So, 120 x 2 : 1 x 2 = 240 inches : 2 inches

Again we need it in feet, so 240 / 12 = 20 feet

So the answer is 2 inches : 20 feet.
